Perched on a hillside peninsula along the Vlatava River in Southern Bohemia, Zlata Karuna (golden crown) is a quaint monastery town only a quick 10km from Cesky Krumlov. The monastery (1263) in this town is a UNESCO site and quite impressive for what is such a tiny place. Otherwise, the town is very quiet and a good place to stop in between Cesky Krumlov and the nearby and rarely traveled ruins of Divci hrad (castle).
My Girlfriend and I discovered this town in a failed attempt to hike from Divci Hrad, which is the inspiring ruin of a medieval castle, to Cesky Krumlov. The hike was marvelous. We followed the Vlatava through the Southern Bohemian hills passing through several tiny and remote villages. Zlata Koruna was the largest (about 600 people) and we decided to take a stroll around. Needless to say, Zlata Koruna was a most interesting stopping point and a pleasant surprise. After exploring the monastery and town we decided that we were too tired and just wanted to get to Cesky Krumlov before nightfall. We walked to the local train station where the gentleman was very pleased to help us manage our way to Cesky Krumlov.
I don’t know how many English speaking people come by this small station, but the operator was certainly excited to see us. We communicated in my limited bad Czech and worse English and he explained that he had a son in America and one also in England. He wanted to know everything that we could tell him. This turned out to be a very friendly and uplifting conversation before the short train ride to Cesky Krumlov. He even let my girlfriend wear his hat.
- Pros:Tiny little town in the heart of Southern Bohemia, UNESCO site
- Cons:Not a whole lot going on
- In a nutshell:A good stopping point in between a hike from Divci Hrad and Cesky Kremlov
