"CAGLIARI "A SUN CITY"" Cagliari by alien57

Cagliari Travel Guide: 31 reviews and 74 photos

Cagliari , a city which has inspired poets and writers, displays a rare, unusual beauty on the splendid Angel bay : impressive stone forts are reflected in the crystal waters, these forts are immediately (and unexpectedly) visible to those who arrive by sea.
70 years ago, D.H. Lawrence felt that the city that rose in an unexpected like a golden mountain, he compared it to Jerusalem, claiming that there was nothing Italian about it.

When the ship he and his wife are traveling on comes into the port of Cagliari, Lawrence surveys the town, aestheticizes it into a work of art, and writes:
It is strange and rather wonderful . . .The city piles up lofty and almost miniature, and makes me think of Jerusalem . . . remote as if back in history, like a town in a monkish, illuminated missal. One wonders how it ever got there . . . It is . . . rather jewel-like: like a sudden rose-cut amber jewel naked at the depth of the vast indenture. . . . It has that curious look, as if it could be seen, but not entered. It is like some vision, some memory, something that has passed away. Impossible that one can actually walk in that city: set foot there and eat and laugh there. (D.H. Lawrence, Sea and Sardinia - 1921)

Words can hardly describe the scenery that greets you from the prow of the boat, as you approach the coast. The city rises behind Via Roma culminating in the ancient majesty of the Castello quartiere.

Cagliari is the capital town of the region of Sardinia (Italian isle) and is situated right in the middle of the Angels Gulf, at the extreme south of the island. Santa Gilla and Molentargius salt lakes surround the city and make up humid zones of great natural interest.

Besides its crystal-clear sea water and one of the most beautiful and longest beaches in the Mediterranean, Cagliari offers an unspoiled natural environment consisting of lagoons, bird sanctuaries and wildlife reserves which are unique in Europe.
The city of Cagliari is the result of thousands of years of history.
The history of many civilizations that have left their mark all over the city
The Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals and the people from Byzantine, Pisa, Genoa, Aragona, Catalan, Spain and Piedmont have all left their mark on this ancient city.
Cagliari offers museums and monuments, architecture and archaeological wonders which the different cultures that passed through or occupied Caglairi have left behind.
Cagliari covers seven hills (Sant'Elia, Bonaria, Monte Urpinu, Castello, Monte Claro, Tuvixeddu, San Michele). The historical city centre is easily identifiable with the four neigbourhoods of Stampace, Villanova, Marina and Castello.
It is blessed with a particularly comfortable climate, typically mediterranean with hot and long summers and mild winters.
The city is the main economical, political, cultural and administrative centre of Sardinia, and is especially the main entrance to the island, with its passenger port, the industrial container port and the airport which is situated at Elmas and facilitates connections with the rest of Italy and foreign countries by its numerous daily flights .
