A car hire or rental might be necessary to make it out into the Alban hills where Romans go to relax on holiday. In the fields you will see ruins of acqueducts among the growing agriculture. Lake di Albano is a volcanic crater lake. It is near Castel Gandolfo, the summer Papal Residence. It is a good day trip site and the small towns are friendly to tourists. You might need to use a little bit of Italian to get by though. I don't find this to be a problem though.
