AUCH .....the Heart of Gascony...capital of the department Gers...the king of 'foie gras' production...ancient residence of the princes of the Church and rulers of Armagnac...and home to the hero d'Artagnan, the Musketeer --- or rather Charles de Batz, the real life character on whom d'Artagnan was based.

AUCH.....gleaming white-stoned and red-tiled in the French southern sun.....is a city of history and art.

The most charming of towns in the South-West is divided into an upper and lower quarter, connected by several flights of stairs.

The lower city was founded in the 1st century B.C., "Augusta Auscorum", and the upper city upon the roman imperial settlement of "oppidum of Elimberris".

Auch was an important stop-over for the wandering medieval pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compostelle and as ancient Auch provided the pilgrim with fine food, lodging and entertainment; modern Auch still remains a place to partake of its many pleasures.

I am quite sure you will succumb to the charms of
Auch , as I did, once you've wandered its narrow medieval streets, called 'Les Pousterles', admiring its many, many monuments and buildings and allowing the quintessential spirit of Gascony to reveal itself to you.
Gleaming wite-stoned and red-tiled AUCH
