The famous Camargue Horses

'La Camargue' is often described as its own country. It certainly felt that way once we ventured south from Arles and were immersed in the atmosphere of the area.
'La Camargue' is a vast expanse of perfectly flat land full of freshwater marshes where the Rhone and a number of other rivers reach the sea.
We drove on long, level roads that criss-crossed acres and acres of rice paddies and marshes and farmlands.
'La Camargue' was designated a botanical and zoological reserve in 1927 and 1970, which helps in maintaining it's natural beauty. Spring or autumn is the best time for seeing the birds, the bulls and the horses of 'LaCamargue'.
Bring a bird book, binoculars, and a camera...oh!...and mosquito repellent might come in helpful too!

THE CAMARGUE HORSE
__________________

The wild Camargue horse is only found on the watery plains and salt marshes of southeastern France. This region is bleak and cold in winter and intensely hot in the summer, but the hardy Camargue horse has adapted well to these conditions.
It is believed these horses are descended from the prehistoric horses of the Paleolithic period. It is an ancient breed and was most likely crossbred with other horses, particularly the Arabian.
I would have to say that my most thrilling moments on 'La Camargue' was whenever I caught sight of these incredible creatures!! I certainly miss my evening walks from the mas to have a chat with my four-legged white friends in the field beside the road.
____________
BIRDWATCHING
____________

'La Camargue' is considered by many as the best birdwatching site in the whole of France.
To read a list of the many birds you can see while staying in Provence and 'La Camargue', go to Surfbirds.com where Martin Birch has posted a week's journal entries of the birds he sited while in the area.
The birds we saw while there included the Pink Flamingoes, Little Egrets and Cattle Egrets, Black-winged Stilts, a few Coots, Moorhens, and on the beaches the Sandpipers and 3 kinds of Gulls. Flying overhead we caught sight of Eagles and Hawks soaring high above in the crystal blue skies!
