Taxis: Taxi Around Beijing

Getting TO/AROUND: Taxis are easy to get in most places. There are 3 types - 1.2, 1.6 and 2.0. These are indicated by a sticker on the back door window. The first 10 km for all taxis is 10 Yuan, after that each km is 1.2, 1.6 or 2.0.

Taxi drivers here cant really speak English and they cant read either. So best way to get around by a taxi, you should have a map or a guide with Chinese writing next to an English word. Or simply ask the receptionists in your hotel to write it in Chinese for you.

    Subway: I miss Beijing's Subway.

    Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: Taking a subway is the best way to get around. It goes to most major spots and its cheap. It costs 3 Yuan for a trip.

There are 2 main lines - the loop line and the straight line. The loop line makes a circle around the central part of the city. The straight line crosses through the loop line extending East and West of the city. There are 2 stops where you can transfer - Jianguomen and Fuxingmen.

Beijing's subway trains are rather old though. I remember it smelled a bit.

It may sound weird to say this but I quite liked the voice of the station annoucer. I really liked her accent....I'm weird.

    Rickshaw: Old Style of Transportation
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]

    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: If you want to do it an old Chinese style, then get a rickshaw. You will see it around the city., specially around hutongs. To make sure you get to where you want, have a name of the place written in Chinese.

    Rickshaw: Chinese Tuk Tuk
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]

    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: Im not really sure what its called. But it looks like a tuk-tuk in Thailand so I'll just name it this way. Anyway, riding a Chinese tuk-tuk can be another transportation experience you can get from being in Beijing. Not sure about the price, didnt get on one. But suppose you should bargain since there is no meter.

Ah so, you found the Starbucks in the Forbidden City! I also like your language tip as well as the Peking "tuk tuk" ... Good job!

I wonder if I could start a new business exporting old American spitoons to China. Who knows it might be come the new "Western" fad to hit the spitoon in bars like it was in America. Any investors?

Keep going with all your must-visit places in Beijing. If my company doesn not send me there for biz trip within the next 2 years, I'm going to make my own trip there. :D
