RUHENGERI & the GORILLAS!

by nsbm - last update: Oct 13, 2005

kingi homestead at base of Mount Sabinyo, near Ruh
Ruhengeri is in the Northwest corner of Rwanda. It is the base town for transport and travel to the GORILLAS at Volcanoes National Park. The journey here form Kigali winds up and down alpine scenery and sunflowered hills. It is a 45minute ride to the VNP but again the early am transit is delightful. Good place @ base of VNP....and on a mistless day ou can see all the VOLCANOES...i had no such luck but you may if you stay long enough!
Ga-cha-cha

Gacaca

Prounouced Gacha-cha this is the local village legilature implemented after the Genocide to deal with the accused perpertraitors . They are held thru out rwanda in local ville fields and plazas.......In the billboard the prisoner or accused has his back to us and is dressed in light candy floss pink shorts and shirt...very poisitive regalia. the government sat on the right and the locals spread around. You can attend these but hey are very personal and hard to lloacte without informed help. The formal trial for the grand genocide plotters is being held in Arusha , Tanzania under the auspcies of the UN war crimes tribunal....

The GORILLAS

located 45minutes drive away from the town of Ruhengeri is Kinigi village where the ORTPN heaedquarters are located. It is best to organise your tours before hand in Ruhengeri as public transport is almost nonexistent to VNP......saying that many agencies are around and you can get a fair fare....remembering that the event in it itself is one of the most expensive you can have in East Africa. It is worth every penny as it is truly a once in a life time experience! Do IT!

Very helpful tips. $500 is very steep but I guess it's worth it.
