You might have heard different ways of greeting people in Australia from watching "Crocodile Dundee" or from Steve Irwin, but it's simply not true! Most Australians like people to say "Hello". If you say "G'day mate" in a really horrific accent (think Meryl Streep's impersonation of Lindy Chamberlain) expect most locals to cringe and walk away from you. Similar phrases which will be met with the same response are "Throw another shrimp on the barbie" and "She'll be right mate". In Australia, as in most civilised countries, we speak our own language. We expect you to be able to at least greet us properly and we'll try to understand each other from theron in. Saying these things I have mentioned would be like going to Paris and saying "C'est la vie" or "Vive la France" over and over again...until some annoyed local tells you you're being a knob.
