When we arrived in Bodrum airport at 4 am in July 2003, we were greeted by a funny looking little man in a mini bus. Meet our driver for the next 2 hours to Altikum! As it was so early in the morning, we were very tired and wanted to sleep the whole way there. Impossible, not a chance with this guy’s driving! He overtook tractors, taxis and lorries on coastal roads. Slightly frightening! Halfway through our “drive” we were stopped by a uniformed officer carrying a gun. He wanted to check the driver’s papers. On closer inspection another man, not in uniform, accompanied him. He was by this stage pacing the length of the bus, peering in at us through the windows. Everyone started looking at each other worryingly. But before we were all shot before we got to our destination, he let us carry on.
- Pros:beaches, nightlife, restaurants, bargain shops
- Cons:clingy men, waiters who practically drag you into their restaurants
- In a nutshell:Great place to make great friends
