Sungai Petani is about 40 km from Penang. Sungai Petani is the second largest town in the state of Kedah.

Sungai Petani, before the 1970s used to be surrounded with the rubber plantation. But since the mid-1970s, Sungai Petani had transformed into an industrialised town.

Sungai Petani is certainly not a touristic town but if you are a tourist, Sungai Petani could offer you some convenient facilities. There are a few world class hotels and good supermarkets.

If you are a nature lover, then you may visit Sungai Petani's municipal garden known as the Jubilee Park. There is a small bird park inside the park itself. The last time I visited, there was a reindeer. I am not sure whether she is still there. But I love to see those trees in the park. The park is adjacent to the Public Library. If you are a tourist and on a budget tour, you may save your money on newspapers by visiting the Public Library. Not to worry, most books are in English.

But please dont forget the landmark of Sungai Petani - that is the Clock Tower. The Clock Tower was a gift from a Chinese philantropist to the townfolk back in the early 20th. century.

You may visit Sungai Petani in either January or February every year to see the Thaipusam festival. The Thaipusam is celebrated by the Hindus. During the Thaipusam, some Hindus were observing some rituals of carrying the kavadi. Some of the devotees got their body pierced. Honestly I dont know how to explain what is a kavadi since I am not a Hindu. However, Thaipusam is a very colourful event.
