The once imperial city of Bamberg is located in northern Bavaria and is considered one of the most romantic of German cities. When Heinrich II was crowned king of Germany in 1002 he chose Bamberg as his favourite residence and laid the foundations for the development of the city, which started in the Romanesque period and reached its peak in the Baroque era. The "Dream City of the Germans" lies on the river Regnitz and the Main-Danube tributary. Monasteries and churches stand in solitary splendour on Bamberg's 7 hills. The town was scarcely damaged during W.W.II and still retains many splendid medieval architectural features. In 1993 Bamberg was awarded "World Heritage" status by UNESCO. |
I was raised in San Diego, which has a lot of military (Marines & Navy). So if you're like me when you go to Europe, you don't want to run into these military guys everywhere. You can pick them out from the middle of a crowd with their funny haircuts and white sneakers. So if you want to get away from US military types, this is not the city to be in. |
