City of the Kings | Lost at Plaza de Armas... |
Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru (4 million inhabitants). It was founded in 1535 by Spanish Conqueror Francisco Pizarro because the spanish needed an administrative center closer to the Pacific Ocean (Cuzco was the largest city in Peru at that time). Soon it became the most important city in the Viceroyalty of Peru and it was also the biggest metropolis in South America until the beginning of the XIX Century. LIMA IS KNOWN AS THE CITY OF THE KINGS!!! |
You may feel tempted to think that Lima is only the capital of Peru and a necessary pit stop to reach Cuzco and Machu Picchu. But I´m glad to warn you that Lima deserves at least 2 days of your attention.
The historic city center was declared an Unesco World Heritage Site due to the large number of colonial buildings. The highlights are the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral, the Government Palace and San Francisco Convent, all near each other. But there is a lot more to see and explore if you allow yourself to stay a little more. |
