Porto Alegre is the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, the southest state of Brazil. It is nowadays the 10th biggest city in the country with more than 1.4 million inhabitants.

People born in Rio Grande do Sul are called gaúchos and they strongly cultivate local traditions, probably more than in any other brazilian state. All around Brazil you can find the CTGs (Gaúcho´s Traditions Center... or somehing like that) where gaúchos living outside Rio Grande get together to celebrate their beatiful and interesting traditions.

Gaúchos are particularly famous for "churrasco" (barbecue) and "chimarrão" (an infusion of mate leaves served without sugar). You just cannot leave Rio Grande do Sul without trying both!!!

• Pros:Nice city. Good base point to visit Serra Gaúcha.
• Cons:Not a touristic destination, so you won´t be amazed with it.
• In a nutshell:South Brazil´s proud metropolis.
