My Lonely Planet guide book for Greece said that Ladadika was the "in" place to go out at night in Thessaloniki. This is not true, or more rather, this is no longer true. Ladadika was the cool place to go out at night about 5 years ago according to my Greek girlfriend, but it has become less frequented by club-goers. I was told that since Ladadika is now frequented by many Albanians that many Greeks no longer go there.
The "cool" places are now in the city center east of Ladadika - from Aristotelus onward towards the White Tower. This is true especially during the winter and cooler weather months. The places to go out at night during the summer is Kalamaria near the water and also the large clubs that exist around the airport area, which just so happens to be the farthest section of the city away from where the Albanian majority live.
Directions: A neighbourhood near the commercial port
The Red Rose is a great little bar over in Kalamaria. I think I felt as if it was the closest thing to a US type bar based on the way the inside was situated. It had more standing areas, and more people sitting at the bar. Couches were outnumbered by tables and people choosing to stand up at the counters built around the supporting columns. It's a small place, and the music was played a little too loud. Yet, I liked the bar setup and the exposed wooden ceiling beams. Definitely a place to go back to, and it's the type of place you start your night off at and then head out.
Dress Code: No real concerns here...everyone I saw was mainly casual.
I went here the other night for drinks, and I was impressed. I'd really like to go back there for dinner, because I just get the feeling that the food would be good. Symphonies' entrance is just off the corner, and you take the elevator up to the 5th floor where you have the main restaurant area. The next floor up is less eating area (although there are certainly tables, and you can order food up there) and more lounge. The bar is up there, and it is a round room due to its position on the corner of the building. It's neat.
The decor inside features a lot brown wood, and the lighting is just right. The music is played by a DJ, and he played good tunes. Beatles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Chemical Brothers, and other pop and 80's...props to a good job of mixing it up AND playing the music at a level that was not deafening. The top floor is also where you can sit outside during warm weather and have a view down to the street.
Dress Code: Again...I was underdressed as usual, but most places aren't that pretentious about it, and as always I did not have a problem going in with my jeans, Merrell Mocs, and tshirt AND non leather jacket.
Directions: Somewhere downtown.
Theme: Eating and Drinking
The Bar is a nice, groovy, laid back bar/cafe. It has somber lighting inside, and there is outside seating with heaters when necessary. They played good music, and the place was filled by 10pm. I was impressed when I asked for a gin&tonic and the girl asked me if I had a particular gin I wanted. They have Tanqueray at least, although they serve it with lemon instead of lime just like everywhere else I have been. (Truly irritating.)
Dress Code: Like most other places in Greece, the people are dressed to impress for the most part. But, there were other people there like myself, who were wearing jeans, tshirt, and non-sneaker shoes.
Directions: Just a few hundred meters north north west of the White Tower.
The Ster movie theatre plays most of the latest major releases that come out of Hollywood when they are released to Europe. You have to call up and reserve tickets. It's not like buying movie tickets in the US where you can walk up and purchase tickets. If you do that here, then you are only going to be buying what's left over, or you are buying someone's ticket that wasn't picked up or cancelled. They have assigned seating which sucks. I have only gone here with a Greek companion.
Overall, it's okay, and all the english movies are played in english and have Greek subtitles. Avoid going here on Sunday and Monday evenings as those are the big movie nights here in Saloniki for some reason.
Directions: In the Carrefour shopping center.
Shark looks like a dump from the outside, because it's set back off the street and the parking lot is surrounded by chain link fence. It's right next to the water, however, and during the summer time, I'd bet that they open up the patio and increase the seating to the outside. Probably makes for a really decent place. As you enter, there is a room off to the right that apparently they only use for dinner, because no one wanted to sit there for just drinks and socializing. Then there's the main room with the bar and the patio area is adjacent to it.
My initial write up on this place was after going there on a Sunday night. GO there on a Saturday night. The place gets packed. It was standing room only when we were there. You'd have to get there very early to get a seat on a couch. The music played varied from US 80's to current rock/pop to rap & hip-hop to current Greek pop. It was good stuff. There were more women there than you could shake your you-know-what at. Awesome place for women - if you're Greek.
Dress Code: Hot attitude.
Directions: Somewhere down the street from me...don't know where it is, because I don't know where I live really. I just know how to get there from my place and how to get to my place.
Nice place where some jazz acts come through along with other types of cover groups. Had a decent time. Cute servers. Good mix of older & younger crowd. No one seemed to be under 21 though. Drinks were expensive. I was drink Gin and Tonic. Only had 3 and I don't know what kind of Gin I was even getting, but it cost me 30 euros. I was told by my friend I was with that the prices increase according to who is playing.
Dress Code: Everyone in Greece dresses up even if they're going to McDonalds.
Directions: Somewhere to the east side Aristotelus Square and just south of Tskimi.
