Kalamaria is where I call home...err...

I'm currently on a job assignment in Thessaloniki, Greece, and I'm not scheduled to depart until the end of the 2005 summer. I am living in the Kalamaria district somewhere near the main road to the airport in a rather decent apartment.

My apt. balcony and partial "view".

Things have improved tremendously since my arrival. I have friends who I go out with every weekend now, and the weather is getting nice again. These two things combined are allowing me to see the city in a different light. It's really great. There are still plenty of things that I dislike, but I wish the improvements had come A LOT sooner than they have. I'm now afraid that my time here will be ending sooner than I would like now that certain developments have surfaced. I'd like to be here through the summer, but we will see.

What's been going on lately?

Really liked the architecture and red brick.

Day trip to Kavala. Alistralis Cave. The Bar. Shopping at Fena. 40hr. work weeks--YES!--Doh! Playing the dating game. 3 day weekends. New restaurants and cafes. A tad more of the Greek language. Nice weather on the weekend followed by ***ty weather during the week. Continuing to get fit. Drinking good imported beer again. Always upgrading and improving the status of my kitchen. My homemade grilled honey-mustard chicken. Greek food. Retsina.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Friends, girls, girls and girls, travelling around.
  • Cons:Pollution, parking, driving, population density, Greek mentality and attitude; homogeneity
  • In a nutshell:Bring on the summer baby!!!

    Working in Greece sure sounds like it beats the heck out of a normal job. I had to laugh at your description of the drivers there and parking! Are you having fun yet?

    My brief memory of Thessalonika was running down the main road to buy some ouzo before my connecting train departed. Now i know what i missed :-)
