Bangkok

by bthon - last update: Oct 2, 2004

Bangkok has the infamous reputation as a dirty immoral city, but I enjoyed my time there. Though warned of the Tuk-Tuk scams, riding the carts seemed like too much fun and turned out to be worth the risk, as I didnt encouter any problems. The temple was definently worth hurrying back from the islands to see, though I thought the emerald Buddha was a bit overrated, and the renting of long sleeved clothing was inconvenient.

Tuk-Tuks

Tourists are repeatedly cautioned about the scams involving tuk tuk drivers. Apparently, tourists are taken to shops linked with the drivers where a pressured sales pitch is delivered. At first, I avoided the tuk tuks because of this warning, but soon the exciting appeal of the swerving carts convinced me to try them out. I am glad I gave them a chance, as I throughly enjoyed the experience. On one occasion, my driver decided to race a fellow tuk tuk driver who was carrying some college girls. Though this wasnt exactly safe, swerving through the city at high speeds was exciting.

Hostels

Both in Vietnam and Thailand, I found the hostels to be extremely comfortable yet very affordable. Though many of the luxuries included in a hotel are absent, a good hostel has the option of airconditioning, private or hall bathroom and shower, and a outgoing informed staff. The best policy is to check out the hostel in person and ask to see the room before agreeing. I usually followed lonely planet's advice and was only disapointed with my choice when selection was limited due to limited availablity.
