History of the Castle

Favorite thing: The castle was first constructed in the 11th Century, and was considered the most fortified house in Germany. In 1423 the castle was destroyed following a 10month siege by a league of imperial Swabian cities led by Countess Henriette von Wuerttemberg. The restoration of the castle was forbidden by Emperor Sigismind, but was revoked in 1454 by Emperor Friedrich III, as the foundation for the second castle is laid upon the originl by Count Jos Niklas.

Bastions where positioned at the corners of the castle between 1618 and 1623, making the castle virtually impenetrable. This was tested during 9 months in 1634 when Wuerttemberg and Swedish troops lay siege to the casle with the defenders holed up inside.

Between 1667 and 1771 the castle is rented by Austrian troops, and modernised with new fortifications, but between the 18th and 19th century the condition of the castle deteriorates through lack of maintenance.

Between 1822 and 1827 the castle is remodelled into a romantic ruin, but in 1846 a contract is agreed for the reconstruction of the castle, with the Prussian line carrying the larger part of the bill.

The third and final castle was inaugurated in 1867 by Kaiser Wilhelm I of Prussia.
