The view over the River is one of the major advantages of the Shangri-La.
Room description:
1. Main Wing, Executive suite:
Spacious with separate living entry, living room and bedroom. Decor is more of a general "exotic" or "oriental" flair rather than thai. Just my impression, I'm not at all an expert. Furniture style somewhat dated.
Immaculately clean. Very nice river view although not directly facing the river.
2. Krungthep wing: (normal room)
Great frontal river view. Nice little balcony. Friendlier and more inviting feeling than in the Shangri-La wing.
More private and luxurious all the way from the lobby without hustle bustle of the main wing to breakfast in the krungthep wing.
Krungthep wing swimming pool was a disappointment. Firstly, it's rather narrow and just plain square. Secondly, it's very often in the shadow of the hotel. Thirdly, it was blocked two days for a chinese water ballet. This blocking for special occasions or even private parties seems to happen often.
Main swimming pool is a real delight. Very close to the river and still with that tropical feeling between the swaying palmtrees at sunset. Great, just too bad all the guests know that and it does get a little crowded in the evening.
Location is good: Close to the river for a nice view and also next to sky train station. (Adjacant to Krungthep wing, otherwise 5 mintues additional walk thru the hotel).
Shopping (Robinsons, grocery etc) around the block. (5-10 minutes walk)
Service: Very good and unobstrusive.
Restaurants: Mainly ate breakfast only. For the rest, I find the prices a bit high. The competition is so huge in Bangkok and prices and quality at local restaurants are hard to beat.
Unique Qualities: Beautiful pool by the river.
Nice river view from rooms.
Krungthep wing next to skytrain.
