With its population of just under 300,000, Petrozavodsk is a very pleasant, small city, especially in contrast with the bustling Moscow and Saint-Petersburg, where most visitors come from.
While there is not that much to do here -- ironically, it seemed that the most-photographed building in town was the train station -- the city's waterfront is an excellent place to kick back and relax in the summer. There are also many fading buildings from the Stalin era that have a nostalgic charm.
That being said, Petrozavodsk's main quality is the fact it is an excellent base from which to explore the beautiful nature and villages of the Republic of Karelia. |
