Saint-Petersburg is like no other place in Russia, in the sense that it looks and feels like Europe. Clearly still the product of Peter the Great's vision over 300 years after its foundation, it is the perfect introduction to Russia for those who feel intimidated by the culture clash between East and West, the Cyrillic alphabet and Russia's many peculiarities.

Of course, we did the opposite: Saint-Petersburg was our last stop in Russia before crossing over to Finland, which resulted in a weird feeling of familiarity even though it was our first time here.

If you spend enough time in Saint-Petersburg visiting the insane amount of riches left behind by the tsars, you will understand perfectly why there was a revolution here at the beginning of the 20th century.
