This gay friendly restaurant is hidden in Vienna`s 5th district, away from touristic paths- and trendy since more than 13 years. They offer austrian, asian and mediterannean food which is usually very tasty and innovative. The owner has another restaurant in the Museumsquartier too, which is called "Halle". Usually you meet some of our Austrian celebrities here, for example Niki Lauda (ex formula 1 driver) or our former finance minister :). This doesn`t mean, that this restaurant is snobbish, waiters are extremely friendly and evenings there are usually great fun. The prices for main courses range between EUR 7 and EUR 20. You should reserve a table. They are open from 6 p.m. till 4 a.m.

    Amerlingbeisl: Great atmosphere
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Amerlingbeisl

This restaurant/bar is located on Spittelberg, in the 7th district of Vienna. You`ll find a lot of nice, old houses of the Biedermeier period in this area. In December, there is a very nice and romantic X-mas market, probably the best you can find in Vienna, with a lot of atmosphere. Amerlingbeisl is only one of many nice bars and restaurants in this area. There is a cultural centre in the same building. Food is quite ok and relatively cheap, compared to other restaurants in Vienna. In summer you can sit in their garden under old trees (attention, a lot of birds there too...). They even have a non smoking area. Have a look on their coasters, they show pictures of their staff on them.

I ragazzi: ...dove si mangia la pizza...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: I ragazzi

I ragazzi is one of the rare italian restaurants in Vienna, where you`ll really find italian waiters- mostly just the name of the restaurant is italian. I like the pizze at i ragazzi, but they offer of course other italian specialities as well. It`s very conventiently situated, close to Volkstheater and to Museumsquartier. You can easily reach it with subway U 3. Please reserve a table, it`s usually crowded.

    Akakiko: Sushi!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Akakiko

Akakiko has several restaurants in Vienna and is quite popular. They serve various japanese dishes, Sushi and Sashimi of a constantly good quality. I reccomend in particular the restaurant in Mariahilfer Straße. It`s on the 5th floor of a department store called Gerngross- fortunately they remodeled the restaurant recently, which took away this a bit disturbing "shopping centre atmosphere". I go there mainly in spring and summer, because they have one of the nicest terraces in Vienna.

Blaustern: An institution in the 19th district
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Blaustern

No matter at which time of the day you go there, Blaustern is packed with people. It is located very close to the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, therefore many students frequent this café/bar, but also many sons and daughters of Vienna`s noble 19th district :). The interieur is of a simple design. They serve breakfast of course, then all kind of sandwiches, pasta, fish and meat, you can choose between large and small portions. Prices are moderate. From Monday to Thursday and on Sunday Blaustern is open between 7 a.m. and 1 a.m., while Friday and Saturday closing time is at 2 a.m.

    typical Austrian specialities: Schweizerhaus
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: typical Austrian specialities

This large famous restaurant in the Prater should be avoided by people who are vegetarians or on a diet :). Their speciality is the rear knuckle of pork (it is called "Stelze" in austrian german. It usually weighs 1.5 kg and costs ca EUR 20,00- usually you share it with 2 or 3 people) and you eat it with horseradish and coleslaw. To drink you could order their Budweiser Budvar beer. They have a large beer garden which is always packed with people, so if you come with a larger group you should reserve a table, especially at the weekend. They have a take away service as well.

Österreicher im MAK: Dinner in the Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Österreicher im MAK

This restaurant is quite new, it opened in February 2006 in the premises of the former MAK-Café. The ambiance is very nice, it is a great combination of an old building (the so called "MAK", which is the museum of applied/contemporary art in Vienna) and modern design. Their chef de cuisine was cooking in the Steirereck for years, which is one of Austria`s best restaurants. They serve classic and modern Viennese cuisine. Unfortunately the service and the food of the Österreicher im MAK is not as perfect as the ambiance (which is not only my subjective impression, but what I heard of several other people as well), nevertheless I can recommend it.

    typical Austrian specialities: Zum Huth
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: typical Austrian specialities

If you are looking for a place that serves typical Austrian dishes but not being touristic at all, then "Zum Huth" is probably a good choice. The restaurant is located in the centre, more or less close to the Ronacher theatre, the Stadtpark and the Ringstraße. The interieur design reminds a bit of the 70ties. I had salmon (Alpenlachs) with spinach leaves and celery puree, which was rather good. Prices range between 10 and 20 EUR for a main course.

East to West: Food from Asia
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: East to West

East to West is one of the reccomandable asian restaurants in Vienna`s first district. It is opposite the Ronacher theatre. They have all kind of chinese and japanese food (usually I am a bit concerned when they combine these 2 very different types of food, but in this case my apprehensions didn`t come true :)), which is absolutely fresh and of a very good quality. For lunch you can choose between a lot of reasonably priced main courses and starters (like Miso soup or spring rolls). As a dessert they serve fresh fruits. I usually go for the Bento with salmon, which consists of california maki, salmon sushi, fried salmon in a teriyaki sauce, rice and salads.

    Le bol: On parle Francais
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Le bol

Le bol is a small café-bistro which is located in a nice baroque style building in the first district. You can choose between soups, baguettes, salads, quiches and various dessert. The food tastes quite good, the atmosphere is nice, though in my eyes it is more suitable for having lunch than dinner. It is one of the few restaurants (to be precise, the only one aside from Mc Donald`s) I know in Vienna where smoking is completely forbidden. Staff is bilingual. They speak German and are native French speakers as well. Unfortunately the service is rather slow. In addition they ignored our reservation, the explanation the waitress gave us was, that we were 4 minutes too late and we had reserved only about an hour before we came there. Consequently it is highly recommended to reserve on one hand as early as possible and on the other hand to be super punctual if you want to have a table of your own. At least she offered us a free coffee. People there are a mix between business people, students and tourists. They sell french sweets and vine as well.

I recall the Schweizerhaus with great humor. I spent my very first night in Wien in the Schweizerhaus, stuffing my face with excellent food & delicious beer. It was a wonderful atmosphere as well.
