Hot Spot Iceland

by coccinella169 - last update: Mar 20, 2007

Reykjavik is the world`s northernmost capital and has not even 200.000 inhabitants. Nevertheless it is a very stylish, modern city with a vibrant nightlife and a lot of eccentric dressed people on the streets. I loved the architecture there - on one hand they have a lot of those old, colourful scandinavian houses, on the other hand super modern stylish buildings, using a lot of white and dark grey, which matches perfectly with the vulcanic landscape. There is not so much pollution, because of geothermal heating and it is a very clean city. If I could choose again I would go to Iceland in summer and not in winter as I did. Unfortunately you can`t visit the glacial lake Jökulsarlon at this time of the year. Then I would have loved to see those little turf houses, which are located in the south and north of Iceland. And due to the weather I unfortunately I didn`t see the aurora borealis. So- probably I have to go to Iceland a second time :).

Golden circle

To cover the most interesting sights in Reykjavik you do not need too much time- as mentioned above it is rather small. So, if you are there, it would be a shame not to do an excursion to the natural wonders you can find in it`s proximity. The golden circle, which is part of the trip of almost every Iceland tourist comprehends 3 things: The Gullfoss waterfall, which is amazing, the Geysir park and the Thingvellir national park. There the world`s oldest parliament was founded. Furthermore, it is a geological very interesting place- although Iceland geographically belongs to Europe, in Thingvellir the European and the American continents meet. And you find Iceland`s largest lake there- the Thingvallavatn. It is an Unesco world heritage site.

Blue Lagoon

Located next to a geothermal power plant in the middle of a lava field it is an extremely relaxing place
No nuclear power plant- this is the Blue lagoon :)

Just returned for another look at your Rekjavik page. Very nice, we loved Iceland. Got to get back there again someday.
