I´ve been to Udine a lot of times, because it is the next bigger town after crossing the border from Austria to Italy. In fact it is only 40 minutes away from Austria. Udine is great for shopping - inside the old town you find mainly nice boutiques with all the interesting Italian brands, shoe shops and opticians under arcades; and in the outskirts of Udine are big fashion outlets and furniture shops. There is a castle and quite a few nice churches to visit as well. Piazza della Libertà with the Loggia del Lionello (you can clearly see the venetian influence) and Piazza San Giacomo are two nice squares where you can do some serious people watching in one of the numerous cafés. Udine is a typical northern Italian town and the good thing is that - apart from the shopping Austrians- there aren`t too many tourists- so it is very authentical.
