BIG CITY, SMALL CENTRE | Me outside the Bank - again! |
Varna turned out to be bigger than I was expecting, but it's hard to spot where the city itself ends and the OBLAST begins. The centre is walkable, half a day and you'll have covered most of it as long as you don't spend too much time window shopping! Love the outdoor markets: flowers, fruit and veg, all sorts; you can even buy very strong home-made alcohol in the street. I have tried it: the grape stuff is delicious but you need at least 50/50 water to enjoy it. Outside the centre, it starts looking a bit grim in many places; those where people live in the decaying high-rise blocks that were much to be prized in the '60's and '70's, and now need demolishing. Varna railway station has been given a good makeover, but the trains are still mostly from the 1930's to '50's, but very nostalgic and good fun. The railway runs alongside Varna Lake, which is fascinating. There;s plenty to see and do, we keep discovering new places of interest. EATING: if you want fast, cheap, good food with a Bulgarian slant, check out BMS - there's one opposite the little church in the pedestrian street, and another near the railway station. |
