A HAVEN OF BEAUTY & TRANQUILITY and other Mauritius Hotel/Accommodation Reviews

First things first. We never stayed here. With their most basic rooms starting at 700 Euros/ night, you can understand why! But my good friend Simran works with the Hotel, and she was gracious enough to give us a wonderful guided tour. The Oberoi, Mauritius is widely regarded as one of the best hotels in the world. And with good reason. You feel as though you're in your own private Heaven - replete with lush gardens, discreet waterfalls, and isolated villas.

Unique Qualities: The Royal Villas (3500 Euros/ night - ouch!) are something else. But each cottage villa is a special, unique treat unto itself. With its own little pool, ocean-facing view and cozy, classy interiors. The entire Resort seems special, far removed from the towering, gaudy blandness of hotel chains.For the first time in my life, I actually feel like saving up for something! I'm usually a rough-it-out kinda' guy, but there's so magic in this place, that it would be well worth returning to The Oberoi... and this time, to stay :-)

We were so very fortunate to be put up for a few days by the Ambassador of India and his wife - the wonderful Mr. & Mrs. Haer, at India House - the official residence of the Indian ambassador to Mauritius. They were warmth and hospitality personified, regaling us with their stories. India House itself is one of the most beautiful buildings on the island, a French Colonial masterpiece in white stone, set amidst lush, sprawling gardens. An unforgettable stay.

Trou - Aux - Biche was something of a dream. A village-style resort, with thatched roof cottages, all opening out to sea. Utopia really, a world away from the chaos of city life. Lazed about in the comfortably homely room, woke up to coffee on the verandah, ate a leisurely breakfast on the ocean-facing roof - surrounded by coconut trees, and decided on the day's frantic schedule. Drift away with a book under a sun-bed, or drift away with a drink under palm trees? Decisions, decisions...

Unique Qualities: The beautiful, long beach was calmness itself. Peopled with backpackers and honeymooners, all seking out their own slice of eternity. The days were already slowing. Would've been better off not knowing...
