Lima is a city most visitors to Peru arrive through and quickly depart, off into the prettier regions. I spent the bulk of my time in Peru settled in this city of vast contrasts, from the grey skies/cheery people to the stark landscape/rich, vibrant culture - Lima is a city of striking contrasts.
One example of these constrasts is the business/tourist district of Miraflores. Here one can find Larco Mar, a bustling, modern mall, perched on the cliffs of Lima overlooking the sea. Starbucks, Tony Roma's, Sushi, a movie complex and numerous stores take up residence. Security is tight, but as a tourist you'll barely notice.
This is a street scene in Villa Marie, an area located on the outskirts of Lima. Here you will find no Starbucks, however there are tons of venders selling ceviche, ice cream and so on. This was the area I worked in - no tourists and I wouldn't recommend strolling through, but it does show some of the stark constrasts existing in Lima.
- Pros:Bustling, friendly.
- Cons:Polluted, issues of safty in some areas.
