Brief History of Boston

In November 17, 1960, Boston was founded by Puritan colonists from England (the Pilgrim fathers). The settlement began on a peninsula named Shawmut (originally called by the Native Americans).

In the early 1770s, the British tried to take control on its colonies in North America mainly via taxation. This prompted the Bostonians to initiate the American Revolution. Many battles occured within and around the city, such as the The Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Lexington and Concord, and the Siege of Boston and the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Around the 1820s, many Europeans migrated to Boston, mainly from Ireland and Italy, and thus, the city became a majority Roman Catholic polis, even up until today. After the Revolution, Boston qtuickly became a very important trading point between Europe and North America due to its geographical location. The most common types of exports were fish , salt, tobacco and rum. From the mid 1800s to the early 1900s, Boston became an important manufacturing centre for leather, machinery and certain textiles.

Boston finally boomed in the 1970s after 30 years in decline, where it became a leader for excellent healthcare services, the mutual fund industry and ecducation. Many students became attracted to to city thanks to its well known universities such as Harvard, Boston College, Boston University and the MIT.

Today, it has the highest standard of living within the USA, and the state of Massachusetts was the only state to have a population in decline in 2004.
