Mykonos... an introduction

We arrived in Mykonos after a quick 3 hour journey from Pireus on one of the HighSpeed boats now sailing around Greece. This way, the travelling time as opposed to a normal ferry is cut by half.

The hotel we found, purely by accident due to the original one we booked being not what we were after, was bliss. The Tagoo Hotel, located in the Tourlos region of Mykonos (15 min walk to the main town) was fantastic. What more did we want? Pool, bar, sunset views, views of the islands of Tinos, and faintly, Syros, views of the ferries and ships sailing by.......... ahhhhh..... heaven.

The main town is quite crazy in many parts. Plenty of tourists running around, eating, dancing at the clubs, and even shopping until the wee hours of the morning. It's definately a town that becomes crowded late at night. There are plenty of type of clubs and bars, and one of the most enjoyable nights was spent at a Greek boozooki club dancing to Greek with many Greeks until 7am in the morning!

If you like more craziness, try Super Paradise beach and stay there until sunset at least. *** Photos included in one of the Things to do tips *** We partied away from late afternoon to well until 10pm, in our swimming costumes! I heard people say there would be too many gay people, nude people, etc. How untrue. Sure, there is a gay club at the opposite end (I don't mind gay people at all and coming from Sydney, I should be quite used to their presence!), but I didn't see the loads of nudies as some people said there would be. It's a beach full of young people after a good time, and nothing else. It's worth a trip.

If you like some quietness, try Fokos beach. You need to hire a car or moto bike to get there. *** I HAVE PHOTOS - view it within the Restaurants tip for Fokos Beach *** There's a fine taverna that cooks all their food without electricity, so it's even yummier. The beach is not overun by loads of tourists. Being August, the busiest month, there must have been no more than 100 people in this beach at a time.... and it's not a small beach! But, don't go there when a strong northerly wind blows, as it gets unbareable. We were lucky, as the wind was very light.

I noticed plenty of Italians love visiting Mykonos, and very few people from England were there. Funny how some islands in Greece attract people from different nations.

There are other fine beaches we visited too, worthy of having a swim.

Try the water fun park too. We didn't go, but I heard it's pretty cool.

Anyway, there's something for everyone in Mykonos. Just bring plenty of cash, as buying a drink is very expensive (5 to 10 euros a drink!), unless you go to a periptero (road-side kiosk) and grab drinks very cheaply there. If you like big nights and great nightlife, it's all there. If you like something more quiet, it's available too.

Sunset view from our hotel, Mykonos

Just beauuuuuuuutiful!

Nightlife galore

Mykonos boasts a fantastic nightlife scene for anyone... numerous restaurants, clubs, bars... many clubs are open until sunrise! Even some shops are open until 3am in the morning! Yes, you can buy clothing, etc, until 3am at selected stores in the main town!

Little Venice has a selection of restaurants, cafes and bars. It's a great place to start the evening as you can see the sunset from there.
