Nieuweschans
In this small village in the province of Groningen I was born. I lived here for 19 years till I moved to the city of Groningen.
People in this village call Nieuweschans Schanze. This village is situated on the border with Germany. In Nieuweschans live about 1600 people. Most people who visit Nieuweschans will visit Fontana Nieuweschans. This is a big spa resort. This spa resort u can find in Nieuweschans since 1985. In that year there was found salted spa water with lots of minerals. This water they use in the spa. Further u can do the following things:
In the centre of Nieuweschans u will find an old characteristic street. In this street u will see some lovely old houses. This street is called De Voorstraat.

Shopping

Nieuweschans is not the place for shopping. These shops u can find in Nieuweschans:
• Supermarket, Coop
• A bakery. This bakery is also a butcher
• An electronic shop.
• A flower shop
• A few galleries
• A second hand store
• A clothes shop. Beside clothes u can also buy carpets. The clothes are not really trendy. More for elderly people

Bank

In Nieuweschans u won’t find a bank. Not even an atm. So bring cash with u when u visit this place. Unless u want to wait for the Bankbus. Yes u read it correct. A bankbus. In this bus which is coming once a week for 2 hours in town u can arrange all your financial things. The disadvantage is that this bus comes early in the morning. This is mainly a facility for the older people in town.

U can reach Nieuweschans by Car. From the city of Groningen u can take the A7(highway).From the city of Groningen its 48 km driving U can also reach Nieuweschans by train. Every hour there leaves a train from the city of Groningen. For the exact times check www.ns.nl

People always think that there is nothing to do and to see in the north. But they are wrong. I wrote for u all a road trip down. This road trip I have quite some times with my parents. And I still go there once in a while when I am back in the north. I hope u will have fun when u do this road trip.

From Nieuweschans u can drive in about ten minutes to Nieuwstatenzijl. This village is located next to the Eems just behind a dike. Dikes protect us Dutchies from the sea, since a big part of Holland is below sea level. From the dike u have a beautiful view on the water and u can see in the distance the Town of Emden (Germany). For bird lovers, there is also a bird house from where u can spot birds.

From Nieuwstatenzijl u drive in about 40 minutes through the polder to Termunterzijl. This is a small village also situated on the Eems. In this village live quite a lot of Fishermen. On a lovely summer day u can stroll over the dike to see some boats or just enjoy the view. If it’s a really warm day u can even go for a swim in De Eems. But this is only something for the strong people, since the water can be really cold. After strolling around on the dike or some swimming u will like something to eat or drink. Just behind the dike is lovely little cafeteria where u can buy some fish (in Dutch Lekkerbekjes or een gebakken vis) or fries. And of course u can buy as well a few drinks here.

From Termunterzijl u drive in about 20 minutes to Delfzijl. In this city u can visit one of the biggest ports of Holland.
