Unique Qualities: Staff were very helpful and made you feel welcome, the place had a friendly atmosphere, for the price it was very clean, bright and new. The hostel is in a great location for an ambitious itinerary as you are close to the station for taking days trips out of Kyoto which means you haven't got far to walk home at the end of the day. It is also a reasonable place to stay for seeing some of the main sites on the Eastern side of Kyoto such as the Philosopher's path (Silver Pavillion), Kiyomizu temple, Gion, Heian Shrine and the Sanjusangendo Temple is within walking distance. Further there is very good links for getting to other parts of Kyoto with Kyoto Station, metro station and good bus links all nearby. Recommended - would stay there again but gets booked up.
There was a very nice reasonably priced french restaurant within walking distance that the hostel recommended and some of the staff also spoke a reasonable amount of english. In addition the menu was in French (for those people who can read French but not japanese) but note that sometimes the restaurant is hired out for private functions such as hen parties due to it's popularity.

There are lots of restaurants close by, as well as a few convenience stores right by the hostel (Mini Stop and a Lawson) which sell a variety of hot and cold snacks for people on a budget as well as a starbucks cafe. Alternatively Kyoto Station has several restaurants in the basement which have reasonably priced meals and some cafes/bakeries on the main floor. For further information please feel free to ask.
