I beleive you have learned a lot about this library from the travel guide books. More practical information include you can take tram to get there as it is a bit of distance to walk. In fact, I did walk along the Corniche in the late afternoon to get there and it is very good.

It is very refreshing and nice to stroll along the corniche, as long as you do it in the early morning or late afternno. Otherwise, it will be quite hot.

Directions: The heart of alexandria

A stunning islamic architecture built in 1943. It is a mosque that you won't miss if you take the tram 15 (yellow line) from the centre to Fort Qaitbey. This mosque is not opened to non-muslim.

This mosque is next to Mosque of Abu Abbas al-Mursi. Non-muslim can enter to see inside. Take the tram 15 (yellow line) 25p from the centre to Fort Qaitbey.

The admission fee is 10 EGP (May 2006). The area is not big and there is only a pillar and Sphinex and some ruins which are non-reconogisable. I suggest you saving that 10 EGP for something else. Not worth.

This place is about 5-10 min walk from the Pompey's Pillar. The site is underground and quite inpressive in its own way. Admission fee 20 EGP and strictly no camera inside. The gurad will inspect your bag to ensure that.

This is a key place where you cant miss when you are in Alexandria. Take the tram 15 (yellow line) 25p from the centre to Fort Qaitbey.

Admission 10 EGP (May 2006). It is located on teh right side of train station, within 5 min walk from main train station of Alexandria. This site is quite interesting as it contians some of the stones from the underwater site of Qaitbey. (see pics)

I was recently in Egypt but decided to stay in the Red Sea area and just go snorkeling every day. I still can't decide if that was a smart decision or not! |
