An exclusive evening visit to the Great Mosque which was under renovation in Nov 2004 was rewarding. The freestanding minaret was spared from the ravages of the fires and all subsequent destruction in 1090. It remians as original as before. It stands 47m high, with five stoeroies high. It is not possible for visitors to climb up.
