Update, September 30, 2009: no new or updated tips, only a link to a restaurant I recently saw on my intro page.
I have to admit beforehand that I have a kind of love-hate relationship with Frankfurt, more to the hate side. This has nothing (= absolutely nothing) to do with the city itself but with a very … well, let’s say non-logical way, the streets are arranged. Whenever I was appearing in and around Frankfurt with a car, I missed one turn at a point in time and only got back on track with a huge detour. Ok, Don (@Nemorino) would have called me a die-hard, but well, this is the past, I don’t add myself (or a car) to what Don calles “sacred flow of automobile traffic” (having this marvellous dark sarcastic undertone, being a cyclist for ages) and take trains and metros now. Plus, Frankfurt’s public transport is very well organised, fast and efficient.
By now I have developed a special relationship with Frankfurt. I come here from time to time for special reasons and it seems that I might have the pleasure to come a bit more often thanks to a special person, a special event just recently and its possible and very challenging aftereffects.
So my view of Frankfurt has changed and I will come more often, as I live close by – it is only a 30 minute ride in a local train. I will never ever even think of trying to write “a Frankfurt page” with tons of tips, as VT already has many excellent pages, ahead of all Don’s perspective on Frankfurt with many opera related tips but also very interesting aspects only a local can give (and especially a local who is a passionate cyclist). Also, I can highly recommend Christine.j’s page about Frankfurt, small at the moment but very much special, as she does always find the secret and hidden places. But I try to add some of my perspective of the city from time to time. |
| | While writing this here, I got reminded that Frankfurt indeed has many interesting opportunities also for shopping and culture. And I came to realise that there is really no single need that I even go grocery shopping in my lousy hometown Darmstadt, where good and individual shops as well as Turkish shops vanish from the scene, being blasted away from these ridiculous chains that take over everywhere. Plus, Darmstadt’s officials are megalomanic enough to believe that they could compete to Frankfurt in terms of culture – well, Frankfurt seems to have more museums than Darmstadt ever has footpoint. And as I just learned that Frankfurt even offers the Museumsufer Card, where you can buy a pass valid for one year to visit all 26 museums …. what am I waiting for to explore this city in more detail ?
.
. And then... I found this restaurant. Passed it only on my way to a photo lesson. But it is there and has a very much delicious menu with Lagman, somsa, manty.... yummm... I'll have a try one of these days!! Restaurant Caravan :-) |
All pictures have been taken by myself, if not marked otherwise. Please do not use any of them without my permission. The same applies for my writings here. Thanks.

richiecdisc Sun Sep 27, 2009 20:13 UTC Book ho's, now that's a whole new concept but one that seems to sum up what's happening at your beloved book fair. | VeronicaG Fri Aug 7, 2009 17:44 UTC I didn't see much of Frankfurt as we flew in and out on our way to Israel and back, but I wish we had had the time to do some exploring! From some of your other tips, I see we have the same sweet tooth!! | Basaic Sat Apr 4, 2009 19:40 UTC I enjoyed Frankfurt when I lived there. Thanks for the nice page. | uglyscot Thu Apr 2, 2009 15:58 UTC I had a penfriend living near here in 1950s, and almost went to visit, but parents wouldn't let me. Seems a shame now. |
