"Hidden Southern Palatinate jewel Gleisweiler" Gleisweiler by Trekki

Gleisweiler Travel Guide: 10 reviews and 37 photos

When we visited several of the small typical wine villages of southern Palatinate in between Neustadt (and der Weinstraße) and Landau, we also did a detour to see how we would like Gleisweiler. It turned out to become my most favourite village in this region. I don’t know what it was, maybe because it is tucked away from the Wine Route or maybe because it does not show off so much as the others do, especially nearby Rhodt. It is cute, lovely, overgrown with plants and wine without being too pompous, it has a noble hidden elegance.

And... it is home to one of our German political veterans, one who was very muc polarising and aggressive in his political past as member of our right wing party, but one who is now one of our main antagonists of globalisation and very much liberal: Heiner Geissler. I hated him when I was young but since some time I realised what he stands for now and admire him very much for his very witty spirit and political and social engagement.

If you wish to, follow my suggested tour and start with the first to-do tip here and continue by following the respective links at the end of each tip. At the end, I link back to my intro page.

Gleisweiler is sensational Ingrid. Just my kind of town. As usual you have really captured the colours. Well done. Kate

What a pretty town. All the little towns here are so pretty. How do you ever decide which ones to visit? You're lucky since you live near enough to visit all of them. I have definitely put Deidesheim and Frensheim on my list.

What a lovely small town - a "hidden jewel" as you so rightly say :-) Like you I would love to drink coffee in that small square with the fountain and shady willow tree!

So this is where Heiner Geißler lives! Though I otherwise never watch television, I spent several entire days watching his “Schlichtung” in Stuttgart. It was fascinating but I was *extremely* dissatisfied with his recommendations at the end. I hope he will finally retire now (he’s ten years older than I am, for heaven’s sake) and just write books or something. -- Too bad the paper museum in Gleisweiler was closed, since I know that you would be especially interested in that, like the ones in Italy and Sweden. (Have you noticed that we can write longer comments now? This just changed a day or two ago.)

Another charming jaunt close to home with some lovely photos despite an overcast day.

Cute little village with stone footpaths and lovely architectural details, overgrown with plants... and I love the monument to the riding school :)
