...despite the masses | Heidelberg Castle - Ottheinrichsbau |
Beforehand a very serious remark: Yes. I live close to Heidelberg and do drag friends and colleagues here very often. However, I have not discovered many secrets yet of this wonderful and romantic city. And, seriously, I feel that my writings here don't deserve to have been put to No 1 for Heidelberg here. Thanks, VTers, who have visited the city with me, but still... my writings are about the castle and a tiny bit more.
If you want to read a page about Heidelberg with so much information besides the wonderful scenery, and things to do, you won't find in the typical travel guides, please make sure that you do not miss to read:
Christine's Heidelberg page
She knows so much about this lovely city, and will bring you to places there, you never have heard about.
Also, don't miss Jess' page about Heidelberg. She was born here and has a very much local view on this marvellous city with so much insight as well :-)
Ahh, who knows my usual destinations, and who knows that I am in constant try to lead everyone to the more off-the track locations on this planet, might wonder why Heidelberg :-)
Well, I lived in Mannheim for a while, and it was just natural that I came to Heidelberg quite frequently. Also, I do some tours with my colleagues from foreign countries to Heidelberg on weekends from time to time, so I really learned that this city has it’s special spirit – despite the masses :-)
Of course I will write about the famous castle here, which I visited so far maybe 20 or 30 times (and more to come). I like to stroll around, I like to see the cities and castles face at every season – spring is my favourite, when the sycamore trees along the Neckar river are starting with their leaves.
Heidelberg is quite famous for the castle, of course, but has so much more to offer, like the stroll along the banks of river Neckar, or even a walk along the famous Philosophenweg, which stretches along the northern bank of Neckar.
If you end up here and are frustrated not to see many tips – please check Teresa's page, my favourite.
I have realized that so much is written about the castle here, but not much in detail. Also, I get the impression, that many visitors just go and see the courtyard and the big vat - which are beautiful yes, but not all, the castle has to offer.
So I took the freedom and wrote more about the history of the castle, as well as about a tour of the castle interior - maybe this inspires further visitors to also book on a guided or audio tour of its beautiful interior.
Oh, and I could not resist to write in detail about my favourite place in Heidelberg :-) The German Pharmacy Museum (in my off-the-beaten tips).
Enjoy - and please get inspired :-)

Updates, December 2008: no updates, I have only exchanged the website of the Pharmacy Museum (inside the castle) |
All pictures have been taken by myself, if not marked otherwise. Please do not use any of them without my permission. The same applies for my writings here. Thanks.

babygrand Sat Sep 5, 2009 20:13 UTC Hey, another Monty Python fan. BTW. Thanks for the great info on Heidelberg. We're going next September, and I love preparing ahead. And yes, I rate every tip I read. | Tijavi Sat Sep 5, 2009 11:01 UTC What better way to start exploring your pages than one that is closer to you. Despite your humble intro, the rating is well deserved for these very helpful tips - and for the glorious idea on how to recycle human waste! lol | robertgaz Tue Dec 30, 2008 02:16 UTC When you spot a Frau; up in Ruprechtbau; quickly duck for cover; if she throws a bucket at thou! // or maybe she just lit a ciggy when 'powdering' her nose that blew up the Krautturm??? | pieter_jan_v Sat Jul 12, 2008 10:13 UTC Jess did not show us the museum; we were on our own at Thursday :) I wrote a Heidelberg warning tip for a reason, the castle is a bit of a trap. Enjoy the weekend. PJ |
