Although I was never north of Chile to discover it's deserts, which means, I only "know half" of it - it will always be one of my most favourite travel destination.
The reason for this is very simple. It has the most wonderful untouched nature I ever saw.
In Patagonia, which is more or less all of Chile and Argentina south of 46° lattitude, the density of population is quite small, leaving a huge amount of rainforest untouched. From here on, Chile has a fjord like landscape (south of Puerto Montt, 43° south), surrounded by snow capped mountains, and all kind of diversity in wildlife.
The people are extremely warmhearted, even if you only speak little spanish. And due to the narrow dimension in latitude, you can enjoy fresh seafood in any small or big restaurant.
You have countless hiking possibilities, and if you like to hike there, please also consider some off-the path hikes. The most famous ones, in Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, are wonderful yes - but it gets quite crowded by now.

My "Chile experience" Well, what can you expect here and on my other writings about Chile ? They most probably will remain construction sites, there are still some 2000 pictures waiting to be sorted out electronically.
I have been in Chile several times, on business (Santiago and side trips to Vina and Valparaiso), and 2 times on private: 1996-1997: southern Patagonia with Torres del Paine, Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas ; 1999-2000: middle and southern Patagonia with Coyhaique (a marvellous hike in RN Cerro Castillo, completely off the crowds), PN Alerce Andino close to Puerto Montt (rainforest hikes) and again Torres del Paine .
I always wanted to go to Parque Pumalin , a pristine half private, half CONAF (government owned forest organization), but never made it so far. It must be a wonderful region, though.
. Sometimes I get questions about the time to travel to Patagonia. Well, this depends on your "weather fastness" (LOL). Of course, the more "North" in Chile you are, the better weather might be. But even early November, it can be very beautiful in the South (south of Puerto Montt). But be aware that there is rainforest, and this means, nearly each day some nice clouds wander around in the sky, open from time to time to throw water over land and people :-)
My travels in this region have always been in December or January, and very often I had all seasons in one day: sun, rain, snow and most of the time quite a heavy wind. But well, for me this adds only to the special magic of this wonderful part on our planet.

That really is sad news about Clem Lindenmayer's death while he was hiking in China. Thanks for including the link to the article in The Independent. | Kuznetsov_Sergey Thu Jan 3, 2008 17:23 UTC Great page! Having seen your nightlife tip with Orion pic I went to GoogleEarth and watched the sky upon Chile! After that I've done some flyings over Cordilleras and saw mountain sceneries which I had previously seen on your travelogues. Thanks Ingrid! |
