"Schongau: charming town in southern Bavaria" Schongau by Trekki
Schongau Travel Guide: 24 reviews and 86 photos
Schongau is one of the two bigger towns in Bavaria’s Pfaffenwinkel, the region with the highest density of fine Baroque and Rococo churches. It has a beautiful old town centre which sits high on top of a hill and is surrounded by an intact town wall, part of it is walkable. It is ideal for a day trip but also as a base for those who like to stay in towns rather than in rural parts. The location near Lech River gives it an additional charm: the river is rather wide here and makes a bend, ideal for walks and romantic days. And for kids the nearby Fairytale Park waits with lots of fun. It even is prepared for non-German visitors with an English flyer.
If you wish to, follow my suggested tour and start with the first to-do tip here and continue by following the respective links at the end of each tip. At the end, I link back to my intro page.

Oh my, this place is fabulous. Great page Ingrid as always, well done!
Thanks dear Kate :-)))
It was a wonderful place to stay and visit the town center. The slower pace from Munich was good.
Looks like a great place to visit and I'd never heard of Schongau before. Thanks for telling me about it.
wow, this is a really great place that I simply passed by so far many times when driving from Switzerland to Vienna. Next time I will also drive INTO town and take a look !
another classic ingrid travel page - i love the light falling onto the church in the last tip, simply glorious. always a pleasure to come on vt and see your recent travels when i have half the chance!
Hmmm, the decoration in this church is maybe a bit "frothy" for me - too much like cake icing perhaps? But the nativity scene idea is lovely, and the guild poles too - fascinating! And I love the third photo on this intro page (and also the similar one in the Town Walls tip) especially - such glorious autumn colours, and such beautifully weathered wood :-)
Oh, and I *really* love your ring - gorgeous!!
Hi Ingrid, I hope you’re feeling better. I’m not a big fan of churches, but your photos are absolutely brilliant – maybe I should go inside some of them after all. It seems to me we walked around part of the town wall in Bacharach when we were there – but that’s north of the Danube, too.
Wow! Another beautiful page! Love the church Maria Himmelfahrt, and the guild pole's are so interesting!
Of course there's a place called Pfaffenwinkel ;)
Does this name sound as silly if du sprechen Deutsche?
