Tourist Trap: Very much tourist friendly = no traps

I must mention this (even if I write “no traps”), as I am always very much amazed about Speyer’s pricing and the people’s mentality. Usually, (German) towns, which are tourist magnets, do have a certain mentality to rip-off tourists. Be it with parking fees, additional fees for shuttle busses, dishes in restaurants or cafes, hotels, museums, shops – you name it.
Not so Speyer !
The city is fair to any visitor as it is to the locals: fair prices, no rip-offs and very often the prices are even lower than average. Take the parking fee for example: where else can you park your car for only 1 € for the whole day ???? This all comes along with the local people everywhere: helpful, friendly, a smile in their face – no matter if in restaurants, shops, museums or on the street.
It is almost as if the beauty and special atmosphere of Speyer reflects in its people, who are proud of their (home)town and show it, which makes the city even more marvellous.
It is like a virtuous circle (as opposed to vicious circle). And this makes Speyer sticking very much positively out of all the other German towns.
If I ever have the choice to pick out a German city to live in for the rest of my life – it would be either Speyer or Mannheim. (even if this is off-topic, lol).

evaanna Fri Apr 3, 2009 12:01 UTC Fascinating page on this gorgous city. Loved it all - so ornate and lovely. The museum hides real treasures, but this Roman wine is just too much - what a waste!:) Interesting story of the statues of the Salian kings. A great page! | scottishvisitor Wed Jan 21, 2009 20:51 UTC So many new things to see and do :) Your pictures with the summer blooms around the buildings are lovely :( What a pity I can't get to a Christmas Market for a few years yet! | tiabunna Sun Jan 11, 2009 12:02 UTC You have added considerably to this page since my previous visit - and I don't have time to finish now. But this is a page to savour, not to rush: excellent photos and dense with information. | Zvrlj Sat Jan 10, 2009 16:52 UTC Beautiful city. Reminded me a bit on Gdansk. Funny but we have never heard about Anselm Feuerbach, until now. And, it is so very obvious that you love Speyer :-) |
