"Close to heaven, literally and figuratively :)" Steingaden by Trekki

Steingaden Travel Guide: 21 reviews and 148 photos

When I travelled through one of Bavaria’s most idyllic part, Pfaffenwinkel, the region between Lake Starnberg and Neuschwanstein Castle, I used Steingaden as a base and stayed at a nice and highly recommended bed & breakfast near Wies Church. This was a good decision, although Steingaden is located in the southwestern part of Pfaffenwinkel. But it is a charming town and all the other churches I wanted to visit are close by within a maximum of 30 km.
Steingaden is very homogeneous with the old monastery structure still visible and carefully restored. The town was founded in 12th century by Welf VI, member of the European dynasty of the Welfs, and shortly after the Premonstratensian Monastery was built. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and liked to come back to town in the evenings with the whole landscape and town in sunset glow. October (2011) was a perfect time and the first days were pure “Golden October” weather. It must be magic in spring and summer, given the photos, Sally (@Beausoleil) has on her Wies Church page, and of course in winter when everything is covered in white. In the meantime I have been here in winter and yes, it is a magic sight. The photo I have used as intro photo for my => review overview for Germany is from 2011/12 winter (February).

If you wish to, follow my suggested tour and start with the first to-do tip => here and continue by following the respective links at the end of each tip. At the end, I link back to my intro page.

Is there any end to the wonders to be found in Bavaria. I can't wait to get back there in October. Thanks Ingrid, you've done it again.

Thanks dear Kate :-)) Yes, this other church in Steingaden is the one I wanted to show you too, and the fabulous garden next to it. Maybe..... you get inspired and plant a similar one at home? I mean in the parish?

What a beautiful area! And you were so lucky with the such sunny weather (didn't see any photos of the snow). I just love to eat Spätzle and Flädlisuppe! Hope to visit this area one day too, so thank you for the virtual tour :-)

Ingrid the churches are wonderful and oh how I wish I had good healthy legs to do those hikes, they look to be fabulous. I would really love to try the pancake soup as well. Another good page.

Great place to visit in Bavaria! We passed this town on our way from Hohenschwangau to Sternbergersee once but we didn't come in. Also I know that one of the famous German shepherd zwinger is close in Wildsteiger... Happy new year, Ingrid, coming soon! All the best wishes from Moscow. Almost all snow has gone away... And it's still +2.

Hi Ingrid, I like your fine photos and excellent, detailed texts on these Bavarian churches. And I like the way you put in links to the locations on Google Maps. I?ve never been to Steingaden but I do know Marktoberdorf and Kaufbeuern, which are fairly close by. (I even used to have relatives in Marktoberdorf ? remind me to tell you about them sometime over a glass of whatever.)

Wow, that Steingaden church is magnificent indeed - frescoes, organ loft, chapel AND cloisters :-)) The garden sounds fascinating too - I loved your description of the various themes. I think maybe I too liked it better than Wies, but maybe that's because you did and it comes out in your writing and photos? But the setting of Wies looks indeed idyllic! Loved the photo of Ilgen from the east too, and perhaps even more the beautiful view from your bedroom :-)

Wow!!! Gorgeous frescos and interior impressions of the Steingaden's church!! Scholderhof seems to be a really nice place to stay, also for the beautiful view from your balcony :) And what a wonderful way to end your trip with a 'private' organ concert in such a magical ambience! :)
