Just a stonethrow away of Burano is another gem little island, which I wanted to visit afterwards, but it was too late. So I’ll place it here, at least to make you readers aware of it, maybe you won’t miss the chance to pay it a visit. I’ll do it next time. Mazzorbo must have been an important island in the lagoon in past time, given the beauty of some of the houses at the small canale, our boat passed by. Fading beauty though, as the house in my main photo. Nowadays only some people live in Mazzorbo and are living on farming, such as vegetables (like on Sant’ Erasmo) and fruit trees. There is also a church which was famous during the first period of settling here – Chiesa Santa Caterina. The Gothic belltower is seen from far away already. It is said to have the oldest bells of Europe, of 1318. In an excellent travel book, I have also ready very good reports about the restaurant close to the Vaporetto station. It is called Trattoria Al Cacciatori, open only during lunch time. They praise their fish menus. Well, I will go there next time and spend some hours on that little island. It is easily accessible either by hopping off the Vaporetto at Mazzorbo station (photos 2 and 3) or by walking over the bridge from Burano (photo 5).

I came across this building while wandering around in Burano in the very east of the island. First, I thought, it must be a decaying building, but then I saw that the garden is kept in good shape, well, in the typical wild-beautiful shape, some gardens are in Venice and Torcello. It has some religious sounding words engraved on the enclosure walls, but I could not encrypt them. This building is exactly east where the canal of Fondamenta Terranove makes the left turn, at 45°,29',04,89” N, 12°,25’,16,28’’E.
I would be happy if someone knows more about this building and let me know here. Thanks already in advance.

Zvrlj Wed Feb 11, 2009 08:51 UTC Once again we have become aware of the fact that we have never been on Burano. On our next trip to Venice we'll have to :-) | VeronicaG Tue Dec 9, 2008 19:48 UTC Such vivid colors saturating homes and landscapes! The lovely old street signs with barely readible etchings are of interest, too.....Burano looks like something out of a picture book! | wroclawiak Fri Aug 15, 2008 10:20 UTC Du weißt schon, wohin wir fahren. Schöne Seiten!!!! | JLBG Mon Jun 2, 2008 05:20 UTC Wow, what an arcobaleno of colored houses! An outstanding page! I feel I prefer by far Burano to Venice! May be we will go to Burano and skip Venice, haha! |
