Things To Do: Burano – get intoxicated by colour splendor

The most important reason for going to Burano is surely the colourful houses, which are a feast for the eyes during sunny days (I can’t judge about rainy days or winter though). Of course I followed the recommendations of Simone, Christine and Sandy to go there, inspired by their photos and descriptions. I wasn’t disappointed, the only drawback was the “timing”; but well, if I am stupid enough (not to listen) and come there in the afternoon… Nearly all of the houses are painted in a different colour – the whole spectrum of the rainbow is represented here, every hue of every kind of colour you can imagine ! It is a feast for eye and camera (haha, and my 3 eyes = 2 of my own, 1 of darling camera could not get enough of them). The only dangerous thing is, of course, when trying to find the best angle, it might easily make “plop” and you (plus 1 camera and 2 eyes) will fall into the canales, lol. I must admit, I was constantly afraid of doing so !. But I didn’t, luckily, as otherwise… well, could not show you the beauty of the Burano of May 9, 2007.
So these houses are said to be painted that way to help the fishermen recognizing their houses when they came back after a long fishing day or… well, a time-out in their trattoria. And I also have read somewhere (ah yes, Wikipedia wrote it) that up to now, whoever wants to paint his house, needs to consult with Burano municipality to get a selection of colours which are permitted for that spot. So obviously, the people cannot just choose a colour they want. It makes sense somehow, as it fits to the legend of the fishermen – he only needs to remember that he has the blue house left of the red house and right of the orange one, opposite of the pinkish-blue one.
I found some “patterns” in Burano, well, at least I see these as patterns, and I will write more about that all in “local customs”.

Things To Do: Tiepolo painting in Chiesa de San Martino

At the eastern end of Via Baldassare Galuppi is the piazza of Burano (Piazza Baldassare Galuppi), the main point for gathering and the church. Chiesa de San Martino holds a special treasure: in the small side chapel Santa Barbara is an early painting of Gianbattista Tiepolo, the Crucifixion. There is no entrance fee but it is polite to leave a small amount in the donation box. Remember that acqua alta is flooding the lagoon quite often (though not as much in Burano as in Venezia), and it should be somehow our duty as visitors of this cosy village to support the restoration after damage.
Photos are not allowed inside, but I found a website with the Tiepolo painting.
Oh, I just realised that there must be a change in “habits” or “rules” during the tourist season. Christine (j) was in Venezia, Burano, Torcello and Murano in March this year, and she took photos, so it was obviously allowed then. I am pretty sure now that they put up the “no photos” signs only in the main touristic period, which is April to September. Please also read what Christine wrote about her impression of Chiesa de San Martino.

Things To Do: Learn about lacemaking in the museum
|
Tip Rating: |

The museum of lace making is the best way to learn about this nearly forgotten artwork. Laces have been made by Burano women since ages ! The stitch is unique for Burano, called punta in aria (something like air stitch). ! There is a lovely legend about it, how it was “invented”, but I’d like to refer to Boris for this description. The museum, housed in the Gothic Palazzo del Podesta, was originally a school for lace making (Scuola de Merletti), after this art tended to fade out in late 19th century. Later (around 1980) the most precious pieces haven been collected to be presented in the museum now. Upstairs in the museum, women who still are able to stitch punta in aria, can be watched working on it. It is good to watch them for a while, as then it becomes very much obvious how expensive a piece in Burano lace is – and maybe helps from buying some of the cheap Chinese crap in most of the shops.
Entrance fee (as of May 2007): 4 Euro for a single ticket; it is included however in Venice Orange Card or in the Venice Museum Pass. Children up to 5 and disabled persons have free entrance. For better planning: the museum is closed on Tuesdays ! Opening hours: Wed – Mo: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. (April to October; in winter it closes at 4 p.m.).

Zvrlj Wed Feb 11, 2009 08:51 UTC Once again we have become aware of the fact that we have never been on Burano. On our next trip to Venice we'll have to :-) | VeronicaG Tue Dec 9, 2008 19:48 UTC Such vivid colors saturating homes and landscapes!
