San Ignacio - more than the tourist hub | Mabel and I sneaking through the jungle |
Just some miles off the border to Guatemala, San Ignacio is located in the jungle of western Belize, in Cayo district. It’s a small town, more or less the hub for tourists into either Guatemala or Belize’s coast. But it offers much more than that – so make sure, you stay there at least for some days. Nearby are the Maya ruins of Xunantunich, the Macal river offers exciting canoe trips with gorgeous animal watch, there is a medicine plant garden and a lot of fancy restaurants in the city – Martha’s and Eva’s being the most famous one.
When we had been there, we didn’t plan to stay more than just some hours to catch the bus for the Cayes – but we extended our stay (more or less a coincidence) to 3 days and have been rewarded with exciting moments in the jungle. |
Updates as of July 2006: no new writing, just added the year I was here, for getting ideas how much prices might have changed.
