  • Around Mendoza, horseback riding is just thrilling ! There are several tour operators available, check either in your Hotel / Hostal, or in Mendoza's "Peatonal", where you can find a lot of agencies.
However - I did my horseback rides with Kahuak and it was thrilling !

The horseback ride (1 full day) took me south of Mendoza, into the pre-cordillera, into a stunning valley full of different and typical plants. A wonderful and serene place.
The horses are well trained and they seem even to realize the "riding experience" of the rider :-)

Equipment: The usual gear you need for horseback riding - long pants and good boots.
    Water and sun lotion.
They organize food and everything else for you - on a full day, you can enjoy fantastic asado :-)

And they pick you up from wherever you stay.

1 full day was 90 Pesos (december 2004 and january 2005), 110 Pesos in october 2005.

Mendoza's surrounding is full of high peak mountains - remember, Aconcagua is close with nearly 7000 m.
So it would be logical that once you are in Mendoza, that you want to climb or hike on one of the mountains which are higher than 4000 m or even 5000 m.

Although I did not do these hikes or climbs (as my actual fitness did not allow it :-), I have seen the happy faces of the people coming back from trips with Juan Pablo Vilche and his team.
In this case, it was hiking on Cerro Lomas Blancas in Vallecitos, a peak of 3900 m.

But Huella de los Andes (traces / footprints of the Andes) offer much more.
I can highly recommend them for any kind of serious and reliable high mountain activities.

One serious remark for those of you who believe it is easy to do these hikes on your own (without a tour operator):
remember, the Cordillera is not the Alpes or US mountains. Apart from Aconcagua, the Cordillera around Mendoza is quite virgin. Thus, there are no well-trotten paths up to the peaks.
Reliable mountaineering guides do have high and long-year experience with these mountains and it is well worth to do the hikes or climbs with them.
Your life should be worth it.
(and no, I am not getting payed for writing this - I just have heared of too many serious accidents of people who believed this is a walkaway and did it on their own).

Equipment: Depends of what you will book. For the higher mountains, they offer equipment, which tourists usually don't bring (such as ice axis and crampons).
You should have your own clothing, however (but if you plan this kind of activities, you will have it with you anyhow): warm fleece (layer principle), ankle protecting hiking boots, hiking poles, etc.

Please check their website, they mention all equipment, depending on the tour.

It is in spanish at the moment, but will be available in english soon - please email me if you need translation.

Directions: As for the other tour organisators in Mendoza, it is always best if you ask in your hotel / hostel to call them and arrange a tour.

Sports Travel: Hiking in the Precordillera - Quebrada los Berros

Mendoza is situated very close to one of the finest mountain regions of this planet. All kind of serious mountain climbing is possible, including Aconcagua with nearly 7000 m.

However, the Precordillera, with peaks up to 4000 m, also have vast hiking or trekking possibilities.

I did a very nice 1 day hiking tour to Quebrada de los Berros - quebrada is the name of kind of wells, where water flows, and berros means water cress.
It was a fantastic hike through the soft hills of Precordillera, and we ended up at the quebrada, where I was astonished to really find fresh watercress, which was growing in the little creek.

So Juampi of Kahuak and I had our sandwiches polished with green stuff and I nearly robbed all cress out of the water - so yummie :-)

The hike took around 6 hours (roundtrip, without the stops), we hiked from 1200 m to 1800 m (at least this is what my altimeter watch said).

Equipment: Good hiking shoes (ankle protecting), trekking poles (recommended), sun protection (hat or similar), sun lotion (beware of the height and mendoza sun) and water, water, water.

Price was 60 Pesos in january 2005, is now 70 Pesos in november 2005.

This was another outdoor activity I did with Kahuak and I was very satisfied :-)))

Very helpful hiking tips. It's been difficult to find hiking and climbing information up here around Salta, looks like there will be much more possibilities in Mendoza.
