Land of head hunters and orangutans

3rd largest island after greenland and guinea ...

until recent times famous for headhunters.... a 'manhood' sports amongst some native groups ...

and gift in marriage ... and trophy in 'eldership' ...

now known as the home of orangutans = man of the jungle

was featured in dallas of jr ewing fame ... 70's american soap opera ..

when riches were made in oil ...

... and still is ....

... thanks to the SUV ....

charted by european travellers in the 15th to 18th century ...

when the brunei sultanate rose in dominance throughout the island ...

name derived from european's difficulty in pronouncing brunei...

... try pronouncing BRUNEI ....

... bur-ney ... bor-ney ... bor-neo ...

recognised and listed by VT as a place name!!!

thus confusing present-day travellers too .....

10,000 years ago .....

was regional centre of trade and commerce based on junks ....

which went as far as present day madagascar off south africa ...

also served as land bridge connecting asia to australia ...

used by migrants from africa to go to australia thru malay peninsula..

now known as aborigines ...

some groups did not make it into australia ...

due to global warming and rise of sea levels ..

tanah merah in queenland is abo for red earth ...

.. also malay for red earth ...

one group live on edge of kuala lumpur in malaysia ..

sanskrit was the lingua franca then ...

Now ...

borneo is shared by 3 countries ..

brunei darussalam = abode of peace

sabah and sarawak, east malaysia

kalimantan, indonesia ....

so, to visit borneo ...

one need to visit one of these countries ...

welcome to borneo ... your big island paradise ....

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:still off the beaten path

How I would love to visit and see the Orangutans in the wild. Maybe someday it will be permitted.

Is that a Flying Coffin I spy there ;-) I'm interested to see that VT lists Borneo as being part of Brunei! Wow, Brunei must have grown a lot since I was there ;-)
