there are about 20 different variety of bananas available in brunei and borneo .... namely ...

[note : it is customary to preface the Malay word pisang to describe bananas .... eg pisang emas. For economy of space, I'll just list the pisang names ]

grass family

bananas are members of the grass family!

ie they are simply overgrown or large grass that bears flowers and/or fruits

they have no hard stems like scrubs or trees

bananas has high utility

leaves are used as wrappings for a variety of cakes and local delicacies

also used as wrappers in steaming or bbq fishes, chicken or meat.

young stems make "crunchy" salads and veggies

"heart" ie purple bit also makes nice salads and veggie

baby bananas can be used as fish bait

skin of stems are made into ropes

bananas also serve a role in traditional medicine

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:easy to grow, almost maintenance-free, yound-round availability, high utility
  • Cons:need plenty of water
