| Zdiar in September - snow in the Tatras |
| | Situated by the main road connecting the Polish border crossing at Jurgow and Kezmarok, Zdiar is a large village stretching in two lines - one along the road and the other in the valley below. It is a scenic area commanding a great view of the Belianske Tatras and certainly worth a stop to admire it. In winter, Zdiar is popular with skiers. In the summer it is great for walks. The most popular of them is the one to Monkova Dolina (Monkova Mountain Valley) where the mountain trail to Kopske Sedlo starts. We have visited the village many times on our way to explore Slovakia and Chris stayed there once with a friend on their biking trip. He has also hiked in the Belianske Tatras while I have not been much further than Monkova Dolina. We used to visit the restaurants in Zdiar when no meals were available at Javorina and last year we discovered even more eateries there, although we really prefer to eat out on the Polish side of the border. But we never fail to stop in the car park right before the village - that is where the Tatras can be viewed in all their magnificence - beautiful and menacing at the same time. |

Bwana_Brown Wed Aug 12, 2009 13:36 UTC This looks like a beautiful area from your photos and sounds even better from your tips! Such rugged and varied scenery! I would love to take a drive and a hike or two in this area. Good on Chris for his biking too! | uglyscot Sun Jun 14, 2009 15:10 UTC Seems as if the oly bad thing about the area was the restaurant. | JLBG Sun Jun 14, 2009 04:05 UTC With your front photo, I feel perfectly at home! Without knowing, I would have said that the photos was shot near Grenoble, in the Chartreuse massif! Same geology, with also caves. Food and houses are very different though! | cachaseiro Mon Apr 20, 2009 22:01 UTC that landscape looks really nice. |
