"The lonely heights of Oppland" Oppland by evaanna

Oppland Travel Guide: 349 reviews and 853 photos

Oppland is a county in central Norway comprising the mountain ranges Dovrefjell, Rondane and Jotunheimen with Norway's two highest mountains - Glittertind and Galdhopiggen. The mountains look wild and deserted while the few towns and villages are all situated in the river valleys, the most popular of which are Gudbrandsdal and Valdres. The area is popular with tourists, especially skiers and trekkers. During our short stays there we met quite a few, some of them well past their prime yet bravely pushing on. If you go trekking there you may not meet anybody apart from a fellow trekker or two for hours - the population density in the area is 8 per square kilometre and the local people seldom leave their valleys. But if what you fancy is a tete-a-tete with wonderful pristine nature, don't hesitate - you will certainly find it here.
For more pictures and tips see my Jotunheimen page.

The Oye Stave Church with the mountains in the background is indeed picture perfect. Lovely page and great area to visit - cute little cabins too.

I like your description of the skiers and trekkers, "some of them well past their prime yet bravely pushing on." Yes, I could imagine doing that in this beautiful area! Fine photos of the unspoiled scenery. . .

Beautiful countryside that looks so peaceful. Your new tips are also excellent. I find the stave churches fascinating, so unlike the English church with its tower or steeple.Updates???

A beautiful part of Norway, but it seems hard to find a part that isn't! The rugged Rondane National Park area sounds great - reminded me of Covilha in Portugal where the peaks also reach 2000-m. Amazing story regarding the rebuilding of Oye Stave Church!

Those wooden churches are just beautiful. They look so at home in that wild countryside. :))
