Spider in our garden - Chalupy

Spider in our garden

Paean to the spider

Fondest memory: Believe it or not, I am very fond of spiders, not the venomous ones perhaps, but there aren't any of those in Poland anyway. They are so artful and clever: they move in the air, yet they have no wings and their webs are so intricate and delicate at the same time. In Polish tradition they are supposed to bring good luck so we try not to harm them even when their webs block our way in the wood. They are extremely hard-working too - we would only be out for one or two hours and when we came back our door was covered all over with their webs. It was a pity to destroy their work but we had to get in somehow. This year we saw masses of them in Chalupy - in our garden, in the forest, on the beach - everywhere, from tiny to quite big ones, which some people think disgusting. I love them all. They announce the coming of autumn and their webs seem to remind us that life is not as simple as some people think.
Needless to say, there were no flies at all in our room this time. Just as well. You can't befriend a spider and a fly too.

Wetsuits hung out to dry - Chalupy

Wetsuits hung out to dry

Creatures from outer space?

Fondest memory: The sun was still shining brightly on one of the last days of our September stay in Chalupy but there was hardly any wind. We thought that was the only reason why there were no windsurfers on the bay. It looked and felt empty without them but we thought they would be back the next day. We started walking on the pier and then suddenly one of us looked back.
The sight was so weird and funny at the same time that we thought it was worth recording with our camera - it looked like a row of black figures standing on the shore. Creatures from outer space? No, just the windsurfing gear of the school of surfing hung out to dry before being packed up for the winter.

Wild ducks enjoying an evening walk - Chalupy

Wild ducks enjoying an evening walk

Strangers in the night

Fondest memory: Walking along the bay can be interesting not only by day when you can see flocks of birds flying over the water, the swans flapping their wings heavily, the wild geese clamouring in a V formation. At night the bay becomes quiet, the windsurfers are gone but even then you can count on surprising encounters with a cat lurking in the hope of catching some fish or a family of wild ducks who have ventured to take a walk on the embankment in the shadows of the night.

Late afternoon on the Pucka Bay, Chalupy - Chalupy

Late afternoon on the Pucka Bay, Chalupy

The colours of the bay

Favorite thing: The view of the Pucka Bay is a never-ending faerie of colours, changing from day to day and from minute to minute and never ever the same. This amazing spectacle is sometimes enhanced by flights of ducks or swans, flying across the sky or of a fishing boat approaching the shore. And on the days when visibility is good you can see the contours or lights of Gdynia on the mainland opposite.
