Frombork is a small town of just about 2500 inhabitants situated on a hill rising above the Vistula Bay and between two rivers: the Bauda in the east and the Narusa in the west. It would probably have remained an obscure place, like many of the neighbouring villages, had it not become the seat of Catholic bishops, who erected a castellated cathedral on the plateau at the top of the hill. The cathedral is still there, having been plundered but still left in an amazingly good condition in spite of the many successive wars. Yet, what really made that little town famous is the fact that it was here that the great Polish astronomer and Varmian canon, chancellor and doctor, Mikolaj Kopernik (Nicolaus Copernicus) spent 33 years of his life and, in 1543, died. |

| | Frombork can be accessed from the land but we got to it by boat from Krynica Morska, enjoying a day trip. We had just three hours to visit this historic place before our boat's departure, not enough to explore all its treasures, but enough to realise that we should come back to see what we had missed. In case you can't find Frombork on this map, it's just west of Braniewo. |

Looks like a lovely town to visit for the day. | deecat Tue Jan 13, 2009 19:55 UTC What an interesting town, and you did such a grand job with your descriptions. I really like, especially, the water tower and the hospital. | marielexoteria Sat Jun 7, 2008 08:44 UTC Very interesting town. Great tips. Will be back later to rate them. | Bwana_Brown Sat Mar 8, 2008 21:48 UTC Frombork seems to have quite a number of interesting attractions! I had no idea that one of the world's most influential men, Mikolaj Kopernik, had such a close connection with this town! |
