At the foot of the Tatras

Road from Jurgow to Podspady in Slovakia
Jurgow (pronounced yoorgoof) is a lovely little mountain village situated a little off the beaten track just a few kilometres away from Bukowina Tatrzanska (see my page) and just over 20 km by road from Zakopane. In comparison with the noisy and touristy capital of the Polish Tatras, Jurgow is an oasis of peace and quiet. Even now that the border crossing with Slovakia, only 6.5 km south of Jurgow, has finally opened, the traffic is not a problem - the cars use the bypass and the village can enjoy its peace as ever.
On a clear day Jurgow commands a fantastic view of the Belske Tatras, the easternmost part of the mountains. Situated on the Bialka River, it is a lovely place for walks, picnics and sunbathing on its banks, ideal for holidays with children. If, however, you want to use it as the starting point for hiking in the Tatras or exploring Slovakia, you had better have your own transport, although there are a few buses a day to Zakopane or Nowy Targ.
Bialka River at Jurgow
We have been to the village many times, usually on our hikes to the river from Bukowina via Brzegi, but last year (2008) we decided to stay there for once, which had been my dream for years. We had not made any bookings - we just drove there and found a place to stay. If we had not, but there were many rooms to let towards the end of August, we would have gone to Slovakia instead. As it was, we were able to stay in the beautiful quiet village and explore the area both on the Polish and Slovakian sides. And, what is more, Chris could savour the wonderful Slovakian beer that he is so fond of. A very satisfying holiday for us both.:)

For more places in the area, see my Bukowina Tatrzanska, Chocholow, Pieniny and Niedzica pages, and also my pages on Vysoke Tatry, Kezmarok, Cerveny Klastor and Zdiar (coming soon)

Ewa, thank you for this beautiful little page on a passing way of county life! It is so like the OTBP rural areas of New Brunswick, Canada where I was raised. So much I loved on this page - Trybsz church, scenic castles, river rafting and cold beer!
